There are a number of advantages observing from Arkaroola. Firstly, Australia's center has dry conditons. Secondly, cloud free days are a phenomenon. Thirdly, Arkaroola is situated high up in the Gammon Ranges. Finally, no light pollution!

Facilities for Night Sky Observation

The two computer-aided Celestron 360mm diameter, F/11 Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescopes have put Arkaroola amoungst the leaders of astronomic observations in Australia. There are also two Star Chairs with 20x80mm binoculars.

Wildlife Sanctuary

The region abounds with towering granite peaks; razorback quartzite ridges, slashed by precipitous gorges; creeks with cool, deep waterholes framed by stately Australian gum trees that are centuries old; more than 160 species of colourful native birds; the rare Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby and other Australian marsupials. Fascinating indigenous plants including the spectatular Sturt's Desert Pea.

4WD TOURS

The premier attraction to Arkaroola is the Ridgetop Tour which takes them through some of Australia's most spectacular country. It is the best way to see the most breathtaking scenery of the Northern Flinders Ranges. It has thrilled thousands of visitors over the years, who without Arkaroola's fleet of four wheel drive vehicles wouldn't have access to this unsurpassed country and its unique wildlife and flora that climaxes in the view from the majestic Sillers Lookout.

Oldest Geological Region in the World!

The Flinders Ranges abounds with wildlife from wedge-tailed eagles and emus to colourful parrots, and kangaroos, which are all indigenous to this area.

Being one of the oldest mountain ranges on earth, geologists from around the world come here to marvel and explore some of the most accessible and visible records of early life on earth. There is information signs throughout the region explaining formations and age.

The Flinders Ranges is steeped in Aboriginal mythology and has some excellent Art Sites at Yourambulla Caves and Arkaroo Rock.
